MISSION-MALAWI PARTNERSHIP

Since 1991, the Pittsburgh Presbytery has had a Partnership with the Blantyre Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP). About 33 churches in our presbytery have partner churches in Malawi, a landlocked country in southern Africa. These connections have created miracles. Schools, churches and clinics have been built or restored. Needs have been met through medical care, education and supplies. People, in both Pittsburgh and Malawi, have been mutually encouraged by being brought into closer relationships with Christ and with their fellow Christians.

Hiland's partner is St. Michael and All Angels Church in Blantyre. Every other year, a Pittsburgh team travels to Malawi to visit their partner churches; in the alternate years, a team from Malawi visits here. This way, faces and names become real and partnerships can be forged via something more than just paper.

This is from a Hiland member who traveled to Malawi with the Partnership:

"The most important part of our partnership with the Presbyterian Church in Malawi is the opportunity for Christian fellowship. We can't make a dent in the poverty of that country (although this doesn't mean we shouldn't do what we can), and we certainly can't pretend to be missionaries; they are at least as Christian as we are. What we can do is to 'mutually encourage' each other in our faith, and it is on this personal individual level that the parternsip works best. "I remember being entertained for tea or dinner a good many times when I was in Malawi. Some of these people were very well off by Malawian standards; others were so poor that most Americans couldn't even conceive of such poverty. In every case, the common thread to the experience was the generosity and graciousness of the hosts. The thing that distinguished these people from many Americans was their willingness and ability to express their faith in God and their thankfulness and humility for what God has given them. "I think that this is why we need this partnership. It is not a one-way missionary pipeline. We have some things to offer them (besides the obvious material things), but there are also ways in which they minister to us. I think that the members of Hiland who have had real contact with Malawians will testify to the value of the partnership, and I know that anyone who has had the chance to go to Malawi considers himself or herself extremely blessed, and is committed to the perpetuation of this form of God's grace."

STEPHEN MINISTRY

Our congregation's Stephen Ministry equips lay people to provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care to individuals in our congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. Stephen Ministers care for people facing tough times. We all experience challenges in life - times when we could benefit from the support of a caring Christian friend. Stephen Ministers are ready to provide the emotional and spiritual care we need when faced with a crisis or difficulty.

"Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." – Galatians 6:2
